Settlers arrived in Orono in 1853. It became a township 36 years later in 1889, but wasn't incorporated until 1955. The city of Orono boasts more lakeshore than any other lakeside municipality - partly due to the fact that Big Island falls within it's city limits. 

Big Island, was once an amusement park with visitors ferried to the island by steamship, then became Big Island Veterans Camp, a destination for our Minnesota Veterans, offering camping and other recreational activities.  Big Island is now reverted back to its original state and is known as Big Island Nature Park, whereas about 75% of the island have been protected in a Conservation Easement with the intent to regain the natural character of the island.  Visitors enjoy beaching their boats around the island to enjoy Minnesota summers on the lake, and there are walking trails on the island that allow visitors to see what the island has to offer.

Today, Orono is an attractive little residential suburb with some great shops, a wonderful country club, and a world-class 9-hole golf course.
